Humidity Frizz in San Antonio: How to Keep Curls Smooth
Share
San Antonio air sits warm and damp most of the year, and curls feel it before anything else does. You leave the house with a shape. By the time you park, it has puffed.
Our haircuts page covers how we cut and shape every texture, curls included, and this post sits under it. Here we stay on the frizz, and on what we tell curly guests at Zayda Hair & Apothecary in Olmos Park.
How do you keep curls smooth when the air turns humid?
In San Antonio humidity, keep moisture inside the hair, get a cut that lets your curls clump, and stop handling them while they dry. Humid air only frizzes hair that is already thirsty, so most of the work happens in the shower and in the chair. A curly cut shaped around how your curls fall does more for frizz than any bottle on the shelf.

Why does humid air hit curly hair first?
Curly hair frizzes first because its cuticle sits more open and scalp oils travel slowly down the bends. That leaves the hair thirsty. When the air is full of water, thirsty hair drinks it unevenly and swells. Strands stop lining up with their neighbors. That is the fuzzy halo you see.
Lightened hair takes it harder. Lightening raises porosity, so the hair pulls in water faster and loses it faster too. Our balayage and highlight guests with curls notice it first. If that sounds like you, the frizz may have as much to do with your color history as with the weather.
Porosity matters. So does the shape of the cut.
Does your cut change how much your curls frizz?
A cut shaped around how your curls fall changes frizz more than any product does. When curls share a length that lets them clump together, the clumps hold their shape. When the weight sits in the wrong place, the curls puff at the bottom and frizz spreads up from there.
Split ends matter too. Frayed ends are the first thing to fuzz in damp air, and they read as frizz even when the rest of the curl is fine.
That is why every service here starts with a consultation. For a curly guest, we want your hair down and dry if you can manage it, not twisted into a bun, so we can see where the curls sit and where the weight flattens them. We talk through every detail first. Then you get two paths to choose from, and you pick.
Amber, one of our Level 4 stylists, cuts for every texture, including curly hair. One Google review from a guest says of her, "she takes extra care and time giving you the hair you want!" That is what a curly cut needs: time to watch how the curls sit before the scissors come out. You can see how our cut curls settle on our Instagram.
Here is the honest part. A good cut will not make you immune to humidity. It lowers how much work your routine has to do.
What should wash day look like for frizzy curls?
Wash day comes down to three things: put moisture in, seal it while the hair is soaking wet, and leave the curls alone while they dry. Most of the frizz we see at the front door was decided in the shower.
This is the routine we walk guests through:
- Wash your scalp, and let the suds rinse down the lengths without scrubbing them.
- Apply conditioner from mid-length to the ends while your hair is soaking wet.
- Detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is still in.
- Rinse most of it out, then work your styling product through hair that is still dripping.
- Scrunch upward toward your scalp so the curls form clumps.
- Diffuse on low heat and low speed, or air dry, and keep your hands out of it until the hair is fully dry.
The diffuser step is where people rush. Cup a section, hold the dryer still, and let that section dry before you move to the next one. You know a section is set when it feels cool and dry in your hand and the clump springs back when you let go. Still cool and damp means it needs more time.
Done right, your curls feel soft and springy, not crunchy. If there is a stiff cast on them, scrunch it out gently once the hair is completely dry.
Not everyone will do six steps, and we do not expect it. So here are your two paths.
Option one is the routine above, start to finish. It gives you the smoothest result in damp air, and it takes the most time.
Option two is the simple version. Condition, put one styling product on wet hair, and do not touch it. You will see a little more frizz than with option one, but it is a routine you will keep doing.
What do people get wrong about humidity frizz?
Most frizz problems are habits, not products. Here are the ones we see most.
- Brushing or raking dry curls. It splits clumps into single strands, and that is the cloud. Detangle wet, with conditioner in.
- Touching your hair while it dries. Every pass through damp curls pulls a clump apart.
- Adding product on top of dry frizz. It rarely lies flat. It usually weighs down the roots and leaves the ends fuzzy.
- Skipping the trim. Split ends fray first, and no routine hides them.
- Using products built to pull moisture in. In our experience, some of these work against you once the air is already damp. Ask us before you buy.
- Sleeping on cotton. The friction roughens curls overnight. A satin or silk pillowcase helps.
What can we add at the salon, and what should you buy from us?
We offer Olaplex, K18 and scalp treatments as add-ons to a service. They are add-ons, not cures, and we will not promise what they will do. If your curls are lightened or color-treated, ask about them at your consultation, and see our service menu for the investment levels.
Our retail shelf carries Davines, Evo and Hair Story. Hair Story is in-salon pickup only. We will tell you which one or two fit your curls and which to skip, because a long shelf at home is not the goal. Buy from our shelf and you know where the bottle came from.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a curly cut stop my curls from frizzing?
No. No cut stops frizz, but the right one lowers it. Curls cut to clump together and trimmed free of split ends hold their shape better in humid air. Your routine does the rest.
Why do my curls frizz more since I lightened them?
Lightened hair holds frizz longer in damp air because it takes on water faster and dries out faster. It needs more moisture in the routine than it did before. Tell us your color history at your consultation so we can plan the care around it.
What happens at a curly hair consultation?
We look at how your curls fall, ask what bothers you, and talk through what you do at home. Then we give you two paths and you choose one. Come with your hair down and dry if you can, with no tight bun, so we see how it sits.
Do I have to buy a lot of products?
No. Most guests need one or two that fit their curls, and we will say which ones. If you want the simple path, that is option two above, and it works.
