Bridal Hair Trial in Olmos Park: What Happens and What to Bring

You have the dress, the date and a folder of saved photos. A bridal hair trial is where those photos meet your real hair. It happens weeks before the wedding, while there is still time to change anything you don't love.

What happens at a bridal hair trial in Olmos Park?

A bridal hair trial is a full practice run of your wedding hair, done in our chair a few weeks to a couple of months before the day. At Zayda Hair & Apothecary we talk through your vision, study your photos and your dress, then build the style. We change what needs changing while you watch. You leave with a plan for the wedding morning.

Here is how the visit runs.

  1. Talk first. Every service at Zayda starts with a consultation, and a trial is no different. We ask about the wedding: indoors or out, the ceremony time, and how many hours you will wear the style.
  2. Show us your photos. Pull up the looks you saved and tell us what you love in each one. Is it the soft part, the volume at the crown, the loose pieces around your face?
  3. Show us the dress. The neckline, the back and the straps decide a lot. A high updo sits well with some necklines and fights others. A photo works if you can't bring the dress.
  4. Choose a path. After the consultation we lay out two options, option one and option two.
  5. Wear the style. We build the look, then you check it from every angle with a hand mirror. Turn your head, nod, laugh. See what moves.
  6. Make the plan. We talk through what to change, what worked, and what your hair needs the morning of.

We would rather find the flat spot here, in our chair, than have you find it an hour before photos.

What should you bring to your trial?

Bring everything that touches your hair on the wedding day. The more of the real look we see together, the fewer surprises later. Whatever you have saved, bring it.

  • Three or four saved photos of hair you love (a handful, not thirty)
  • Your veil, comb, clips or headpiece, if you have them
  • A photo of your dress, or a top with a similar neckline
  • Earrings or a necklace you plan to wear, since they change how much hair you want showing
  • Hair that is clean and light on product, unless we tell you otherwise when you book
  • Any hair concerns: a cowlick, a flat spot, a side that never holds a curl

A second opinion is welcome too. One person whose taste you trust is plenty.

Option one or option two: how we lay out your choices

After the consultation, we give you two paths. Option one is the more involved look, with every detail that goes into it. Option two is the easiest version, kept simple and easy to live with on a long wedding day.

That habit comes from Erika Valdez, our owner and executive stylist, with 18 years behind the chair. Every stylist at Zayda trains with Erika, so the conversation runs the same way no matter who is in your chair.

It matters because a style can look beautiful in the mirror and be hard to keep up for ten hours. Some brides want the detailed braid work and every pinned piece. Others hear what option one takes and happily pick the softer route. Both are good answers. Neither is the lesser choice.

This is also not the day to be polite. Come as you are, and if you don't love something, say it out loud in the chair. That is the whole reason we do the trial early.

Turning a saved photo into something that works on your hair is the real skill here. You can see our bridal and event styling on our Instagram.

What changes how your bridal hair trial turns out?

Timing and preparation shape the result more than any product does. These are the mistakes we see most often.

Doing the trial before the color. Color first, every time. Freshly lightened hair tends to feel drier and grips a pin. Glossed hair is smoother and can let one slide. In our experience, finishing color at least a few days before the trial gives it time to settle. If you are planning balayage or a gray blend, our hair color page shows where to start.

Booking it too close to the wedding. A trial only helps if there is time to act on it. A few weeks to a couple of months ahead usually leaves room to adjust the style. It also leaves room to change a color plan if the trial shows you need to.

Judging it from one angle, standing still. The front looks great, and then the back surprises you. Ask for a second mirror and check the side and the back. Then move. Turn, hug someone, dance a little. A style that looks set when you sit still can loosen fast.

Forgetting the setting. A short ceremony and a long reception ask different things of your hair. An open-air venue in San Antonio is not a ballroom. We see smooth styles soften faster in our heat and humidity than they do in an air-conditioned room. Tell us where you are getting married and how long the day runs, and we build for it.

What happens after the trial?

You leave with a plan, not just a hairstyle. We talk through what we did, what you want changed, and what your hair needs on the wedding morning. That might include how clean to start and how to sleep on it the night before.

Keep the trial style in for the rest of the day if you can. See how it holds through dinner or an evening out. That tells you more than ten minutes in front of the salon mirror. Take photos from the back and the sides. Send us a note if something drops or shifts, and we can adjust the plan.

A trial is not a promise about the wedding day. A long day, warm weather and a lot of hugging all play a part. What it gives you is a tested plan with far fewer unknowns. Effortless, natural looking hair on the day usually starts with a trial where you spoke up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I schedule my bridal hair trial?

In our experience, a few weeks to a couple of months before the wedding leaves enough room to adjust. It also leaves time to finish any color first. If your wedding is sooner, call or text us and we will find a spot that still works.

Do I need to wash my hair before my trial?

Yes. Come with clean hair that is light on product, unless we say otherwise when you book. Heavy product gets in the way of how a style builds and holds. Ask when you call if you are unsure.

What if I don't know what I want?

That is normal, and it is what the consultation is for. Bring a few photos and tell us how you want to feel. We will show you two options, and seeing them on your own hair makes the choice easier. You can change your mind after you see it.

How much does a trial cost?

It depends on the stylist's level and the work your look takes. Pricing by level lives on our service menu. We talk your look through during the consultation before anything starts.
