Balayage or Highlights: How to Choose Your Color
Share
Balayage and highlights both brighten your hair, but they get there in different ways and they live differently as they grow out. Here is how we think about the choice at Zayda Hair & Apothecary in San Antonio.
The quick version
- Balayage is hand painted for a soft, lived in blend.
- Foil highlights lift brighter and more uniform.
- Balayage grows out softer, so you visit less often.
- Your stylist picks the technique at your consultation.
What balayage is
Balayage is a freehand painting technique. Your stylist sweeps color through the hair by hand, concentrating brightness where the light would naturally hit. The result is soft and dimensional, and the regrowth is gentle, which is why so many guests love it for low upkeep.
What foil highlights are
Foils lift sections of hair wrapped in foil, which gives a brighter, more uniform result and more control near the root. If you want maximum brightness or a crisp, even blonde, foils are often the better tool.
Which one suits you
It comes down to the look you want and how often you want to visit. Want something you can grow out gracefully? Balayage. Want bright and even, or better gray coverage? Foils. Many guests end up with a mix, and that is exactly what the consultation is for. You can see both on our hair color menu.
